The Hudson River School started in American from 1835 to the1870s. It encompasses two generations of painters inspired by Thomas Cole's romantic images of America's wilderness - in the Hudson River Valley and also in the newly opened West. The use of light and its effects in a painting adds an exaggerated drama to elements such as mist and sunsets. This technique developed into a subspecialty known as Luminism.
