Realism began in the 19th century and is the visual style that used new methods of pictorial representation to make things appear as they are in life. Artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci focused on scientifically deconstructing the concept of vision, and studied the optical effects of light. The subject matter of realism emphasized the depiction of everyday subjects in modern day life. Great Realist artists include Leonardo Da Vinci, Gustave Courbet, Honore Daumier and Thomas Eakins.
