As well as being a cultural movement during the early 1900s, expressionism was the exploration of the artist vividly expressing subjective feelings. The paintings aim to reflect the artist's state of mind rather than the reality of the external world. In many cases the artist would dramatically distort the image to create the desired emotional effect. Artists from this movement sought to convey the meaning of living as being an emotional experience rather than physical reality. Popular artists of this style are chagall Marc Chagall, Wassily Kandinsky, Ludwig Kirchner and Edvard Munch whose famous piece The Scream (1893) inspired 20th century expressionists.
Abstract expressionism began in the mid-20th century implemented radical change in nontraditional and non representational methods to convey the artist's personal emotions and ideas. Many of the artists used only color and shape to convey meaning and emotion instead of people, objects or places found in real life. Two famous examples of these are Sonia Delaunay and Jackson Pollock.
