Surrealism began in the early 1920s and was first a philosophical movement. The movement was based on the idea that if a familiar object was conveyed in a strange or mysterious way, a new perspective would be derived from ones hidden unconscious thoughts or dreams. Surrealism developed out of the Dada activities of World War I, which protested the war through a rejection of prevailing standards in art and cultural norms. The purpose was to question the meaning of standards and demand in an anarchistic nature that one question the limitations that society places on ones life. This was conveyed through public gatherings, demonstrations, and coverage of politics in media and art. Famous surrealist artists are Salvador Dali, Henri Rousseau and Max Ernst.
